A.S. King, also known as Amy Sarig King, is a highly acclaimed American author, best known for her young adult novels. She was born in Pennsylvania on March 10, 1970, and spent her formative years in Reading. King developed a love for reading and writing at an early age, although she initially focused on other interests during her school years.
King's journey to becoming a published author was not without its challenges. After attending a semester and a half at a state school, she transferred to the Art Institute of Philadelphia, where she earned a degree in photography. It was during this time that she met her husband, Topher King, an exchange counselor from Ireland. After their marriage in 1992, the couple moved to Ireland, where King became involved in adult literacy work and discovered a passion for surrealist fiction. This newfound love for reading inspired her to begin writing novels, and she spent several years honing her craft before returning to the United States in 2004.
King's writing process is characterized by her organic approach to character development. Unlike some authors who meticulously plan their novels, King prefers to start with a character and see where their story takes her. This method has resulted in a number of critically acclaimed young adult novels, including "The Dust of 100 Dogs," "Everybody Sees the Ants," and "Please Ignore Vera Dietz," which received a 2011 Michael L. Printz Honor.
In addition to her work as a novelist, King is also a dedicated advocate for mental health awareness among young people. She frequently speaks at high schools, universities, and conferences, sharing her insights on the importance of open conversations about mental health and the role that literature can play in promoting emotional well-being. In 2022, King was named the winner of the American Library Association's Margaret A. Edwards Award for her lasting contribution to young adult literature. She continues to write and speak passionately about the issues that matter most to her, inspiring readers and fellow writers alike.
