Alex Gilvarry

Alex Gilvarry is an American author, known for his humorous and insightful writing in the literature and fiction genre. He was born in Staten Island, New York, in 1881, and grew up in a family with Filipino roots. Gilvarry has traveled extensively, including frequent visits to the Philippines. He currently resides in his hometown in New York, as well as in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Brooklyn.

Gilvarry completed his graduate studies in Creative Writing at the CUNY - Hunter College MFA Program in 2009. In 2014, he was recognized by the National Book Foundation as one of the "5 Under 35" authors. Currently, he teaches Creative Writing at Monmouth University in New Jersey and fiction at Wesleyan University. Gilvarry is also the founding editor of the Tottenville Review, a collaborative book review website.

Gilvarry's writing career has produced two books so far, with his first book, "From the Memoirs of A Non Enemy Combatant," earning him the Hornblower Award for Best First Fiction in 2012. The book was also selected as the Editor's Choice by the New York Times. His second novel, "Eastman Was Here," was published in August 2017 by Viking publishers. Gilvarry's work has been featured in various publications, including the Boston Globe, The Nation, and NPR's All Things Considered.
