Gray received her education in her hometown, earning an honors degree in English from the University of Strathclyde. Born on May 27, 1950, in Glasgow, Alex Gray grew up in the Craigbank region and attended Hutcheson's Grammar School. Her parents played a significant role in shaping her life; her father was a telecommunications engineer, and her mother, originally from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, worked as a telephone exchange operator. Gray went on to study Philosophy and English at Strathclyde University.
Before becoming a full-time author, Gray worked as a folk singer, a visiting officer in the DSS, and an English teacher. Her talent for crime writing has been recognized with the Scottish Association of Writers Constable and Pitlochry trophies. Gray's novels, published under the DCI Lorimer series, have been released by Canongate and Little Brown publications.
