Alexander Key

Alexander Key was an American science fiction author, best known for his works aimed at a younger audience. He was born on September 21, 1904, in La Plata, Maryland. Before finding success as an author, Key was a nationally recognized illustrator. He attended the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois, between 1921 and 1923, where he honed his artistic skills.

Key's books often feature alien but human-like characters with psychic powers and a deep connection to nature, enabling them to communicate with animals. This theme is evident in his novel, "The Strange White Doves," where he expresses his belief in animal consciousness and their subtle ways of communicating, possibly through telepathy. Key's protagonists are frequently ostracized, feared, or persecuted due to their abilities or alien origins, serving as a clear metaphor for racism and other prejudices.

In many of his books, Key explores the idea of communities of like-minded individuals withdrawing from society, creating a safe haven for those who are different or persecuted. For instance, in "The Case of the Vanishing Boy," this concept is explored in depth. Key's works often reflect his values and beliefs, making his science fiction novels not only entertaining but also thought-provoking and relevant to social issues. Unfortunately, Key passed away in 1979, leaving behind a legacy of engaging and influential science fiction novels for younger readers.

Key's novels have been adapted into popular films and anime series, showcasing the enduring appeal of his stories. His novel "Escape to Witch Mountain" was adapted into a successful film in 1975 and again in 1995, while "The Incredible Tide" became a popular anime series, "Future Boy Conan." These adaptations attest to Key's ability to craft captivating stories that resonate with audiences of all ages.
