Martin is best known for his Jim Stringer, Steam Detective book series, which features a railwayman named Jim Stringer who is reassigned to the North Eastern Railway police in Edwardian England. The series includes popular books such as "The Necropolis Railway," "The Blackpool Highflyer," "The Lost Luggage Porter," "Murder at Deviation Junction," and "Death on a Branch Line." In addition to his detective novels, Martin has also written non-fiction works, including "How to Get Things Really Flat: A Man's Guide to Ironing, Dusting and Other Household Arts."

He has also written about preserved railways in his book "Steam Trains Today." In addition to his rail-themed books, Martin has also written historical crime novels outside of the Jim Stringer series, including "Soot," "The Martian Girl," and "The Winker."
