Andy Lane

Andrew Lane is a renowned British author, born in 1963, who has made a significant impact in the world of young adult (YA) historical fiction, science fiction, and adventure novels. He is best known for his work on the Young Sherlock Holmes series, which has been praised for its engaging storytelling and faithful adaptation of the iconic detective's early life. Lane's passion for writing was ignited during his time at Warwick University, where he studied Physics and formed friendships with fellow writers Justin Richards and Craig Hinton.

As a journalist and an author, Lane has developed an extensive knowledge of the Sherlock Holmes character and continuity. This expertise was showcased in his Virgin Books novel All-Consuming Fire, where he introduced The Library of St. John the Beheaded as a meeting place for the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Who. Lane's fascination with Sherlock Holmes can be traced back to his childhood, when he imagined the detective sharing his own appearance. His favorite Sherlock Holmes story, 'The Hound of the Baskerville,' further fueled his passion for the character. In addition to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Lane's writing has been influenced by authors such as Tim Powers, Jonathan Carroll, Stephen Gallagher, and David Morrel.

Lane's career as an author took off in 2010 with the publication of his first series, which was an instant success. Macmillan had previously announced that Lane would write a series focusing on the early life of Sherlock Holmes, in collaboration with the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The Young Sherlock Holmes series, consisting of six books, was well-received by both critics and readers, with Death Cloud being shortlisted for the 2010 North East Book Award and the 2011 Southampton's Favourite Book Award. Black Ice won the 2012 Centurion Book Award, solidifying Lane's reputation as a skilled and captivating storyteller.

In addition to the Young Sherlock Holmes series, Lane has also written The Lost World books, which follow disabled 15-year-old Calum Challenger and his team as they search for rare creatures and their DNA to help protect endangered species and find a cure for Calum's paralysis. This series, featuring a diverse cast of characters, demonstrates Lane's ability to create engaging stories that resonate with a wide audience. Lane currently resides in Dorset, England, with his wife and son, where he continues to write and contribute to the world of literature.
