Ann Rule

Ann Rule was a highly respected American true crime author, renowned for her in-depth analyses of some of the most heinous killers of the twentieth century. Raised in a family deeply entrenched in the law enforcement and criminal justice system, Rule developed an early interest in the criminal mind. This interest would eventually lead her to become a full-time true crime writer, a career that spanned over four decades.

Rule's writing career began with her work for women's magazines, such as True Detective, where she wrote under the pseudonym Andy Stack. However, it was her first book, "The Stranger Beside Me," that would catapult her to fame. The book, which dealt with the Ted Bundy murders, was particularly notable because Rule had been friends with Bundy during the time of the murders. This unique perspective gave her book a depth and insight that was lacking in other true crime books.

Throughout her career, Rule wrote about seemingly every American serial killer, delving into their lives and motivations with a signature accessible style. Her books not only focused on the killers themselves but also on the victims' stories and the detectives and prosecutors who worked tirelessly to solve the cases. Rule's ability to weave these different perspectives together in a compelling narrative set her apart from other true crime writers.

Rule's contributions to the true crime genre have been widely recognized. She won two Anthony Awards from Bouchercon, the mystery fans' organization, and was nominated three times for the Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America. Rule's books have been adapted into television movies, and she has been awarded the Washington State Governor's Award. Despite her passing in 2015, Rule's brand remains strong, and her books continue to captivate readers with their in-depth analyses of some of the most notorious killers in American history.
