Annie Groves was a bestselling English author, who wrote over two hundred novels before her death in 2011. She was born as Penelope Jones Halsall on November 24, 1946, in Preston, Lancashire, England. From a young age, Halsall was an avid reader and an aspiring storyteller. She began her writing career in the 1970s, when she entered a competition run by the Romantic Novelists' Association. Although she did not win, she managed to find an agent who helped her launch her career.
Halsall wrote under various pseudonyms, including Caroline Courtney, Melinda Wright, Lydia Hitchcock, and Penny Jordan. She first published four regency novels as Caroline Courtney before switching to Melinda Wright and writing two thrillers as Lydia Hitchcock. However, it was under the name Penny Jordan that she gained widespread recognition and success, publishing her first novel, Falcon's Prey, with Mills and Boon. Later, she adopted her mother's maiden name and began writing historical romance novels as Annie Groves.
As Annie Groves, Halsall wrote many successful historical romance novels, which were well-received by critics and readers alike. Her novels were known for their vivid historical settings, compelling characters, and engaging storylines. Almost 70 million of her 167 Mills and Boon novels have been sold worldwide, a testament to her popularity and talent as a writer. Halsall lived in a house in Nantwich, Cheshire, and worked from home. She passed away on December 31, 2011, leaving behind a legacy as one of England's most successful and prolific romance authors.
