Barbara Michaels is a well-known author, who has written under various pen names, including her own. Michaels is the pseudonym used by Barbara Mertz, who also wrote under the name Elizabeth Peters. Mertz was born in Canton, Illinois, and went on to become a prolific writer, producing more than fifty books over the course of her career.
In addition to her work as a writer, Mertz was also an accomplished scholar of Egyptology. She held a Ph.D. in the subject from the University of Chicago, and her expertise in the field informed much of her writing.
