Bart D. Ehrman

Bart D. Ehrman is a highly respected scholar and author in the field of New Testament and Early Christianity studies. He was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on October 5, 1955, and grew up in Kansas and Illinois. Ehrman attended Wheaton College in Illinois, where he received his undergraduate degree. He then went on to earn his Masters of Divinity and PhD at Princeton Theological Seminary.

Ehrman has held the position of James A. Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) since 1988. Prior to his time at UNC, he taught at Rutgers University for four years. During his tenure at UNC, Ehrman has served in various leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of Religious Studies and Director of Graduate Studies. He is an accomplished and prolific scholar, having published 21 books, numerous scholarly articles, and dozens of book reviews in his field. Some of his most notable works include "Misquoting Jesus" and "God’s Problem," both of which were New York Times bestsellers.

Ehrman's areas of expertise include the historical Jesus, the early Christian apocrypha, the apostolic fathers, and the manuscript tradition of the New Testament. He has received numerous awards and grants for his teaching and scholarship, including the UNC Undergraduate Student Teaching Award, the Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement, and the Bowman and Gordon Gray Award for excellence in teaching.

Ehrman is married to Sarah Beckwith, Marcello Lotti Professor of English at Duke University. He has two children, Kelly and Derek. He currently resides in Durham, North Carolina.
