Bartholomew Gill

Bartholomew Gill is the pseudonym of Mark C. McGarrity, an American novelist best known for his mystery novels, particularly the Peter McGarr series. Gill was born on July 22, 1943, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and went on to attend and graduate from Brown University. He later earned a Master's degree from Trinity College, Dublin. Gill was an avid outdoorsman and wrote columns and features on the subject.

Throughout his writing career, Gill wrote a total of 22 mystery novels, most of which were set in Ireland and featured the hard-working police detective Peter McGarr. The pseudonym of Bartholomew Gill was actually the name of his maternal grandfather, who he considered to be an exceptional storyteller. In addition to writing under the pseudonym, Gill also wrote several works of nonfiction and five novels under his original name, Mark C. McGarrity. All of his writings for The Star-Ledger were released under his real name.

Before his career as a novelist, Gill completed his graduation from Brown University and obtained his bachelor's degree. Later, he enrolled at Trinity College, Dublin, where he earned his master's degree. Gill was married for some time but later got divorced.

In addition to his writing, Gill also worked at The Star-Ledger of Newark as a features writer and columnist under the McGarrity name, specializing in nature and outdoor recreation. Despite his busy schedule, he continued to produce McGarr novels at the rate of one a year, while also writing several articles a week for the newspaper. He wrote about a wide range of topics, from environmental issues to the unique characters he encountered in his travels. In addition to his series of Peter McGarr Mystery novels, Gill also published five novels under his own name.
