D.W. Buffa

D.W. Buffa is an American author, best known for his legal and crime thrillers. Born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area, Buffa attended Michigan State University before moving on to study political science at the University of Chicago, where he earned both an M.A. and a Ph.D. He later received his J.D. degree from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Before becoming a novelist, Buffa worked as a criminal defense attorney for ten years. This experience has significantly influenced his work, providing him with a deep understanding of the American judicial system and the courtroom dynamics that he masterfully portrays in his Joseph Antonelli series. The series strives to reflect the reality of a courtroom lawyer's work, thoughts, and feelings, offering readers an engaging and authentic experience.

Buffa began writing for pleasure long before his professional writing career took off. His first novel, The Defense, was published in 1997 by Henry Holt and Co. The novel received critical acclaim from The New York Times literary critic Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, who called it an 'accomplished first novel' that leaves readers wanting to read it again. The Defense was followed by The Prosecution and The Judgment, with the latter being nominated for the Edgar Award as best novel of the year in 2002.

In addition to the Joseph Antonelli series, Buffa has also ventured into political thrillers, with his fourth novel, The Legacy, taking place in San Francisco. His subsequent novels, Star Witness and Breach of Trust, offer readers a captivating look into the world of Hollywood and Washington politics, respectively. Trial by Fire, Buffa's seventh Joseph Antonelli novel, explores the increasing influence of television 'Talking heads' in high-profile criminal cases.

In recent years, Buffa has introduced a new series centered around protagonist Senator Bobby Hart, an Antonelli-type everyday hero of strong moral fiber who challenges the establishment for the betterment of his constituents. Buffa currently resides in Northern California, where he continues to write and captivate readers with his intricate and engaging narratives.
