Daniel F. Galouye

Daniel Francis Galouye was an American science fiction writer best known for his thought-provoking novels and short stories published during the 1950s and 1960s. His works appeared in prominent magazines such as "Galaxy Science Fiction" and "The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction", often under the pseudonym Louis G. Daniels. Among his notable novels, "Simulacron Three" gained widespread recognition as the basis for the film "The Thirteenth Floor" and the German TV miniseries "Welt am Draht". His debut novel, "Dark Universe" (1961), earned a Hugo Award nomination, cementing his reputation as a significant voice in speculative fiction.

Before his writing career, Galouye served as a Navy instructor and test pilot during World War II, an experience that left him with lasting health challenges. He later worked as a journalist for "The States-Item" while simultaneously crafting his science fiction stories. His background in journalism influenced his precise, immersive prose, often exploring themes of perception, reality, and dystopian societies. Galouye's unique perspective and narrative depth distinguished his work within the genre.

In 2007, Galouye posthumously received the Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award, honoring his contributions to science fiction and ensuring his legacy for modern readers. Though his career was cut short by his passing in 1976, his innovative storytelling continues to resonate, particularly through adaptations of "Simulacron Three". Galouye remains a celebrated figure whose works bridge mid-century science fiction with contemporary philosophical explorations.
