David Anthony Durham

David Anthony Durham is an American novelist known for his historical fiction and fantasy works. Born in New York City to parents of Caribbean descent, he grew up primarily in Maryland before living in various locations across the United States and Europe. Durham gained recognition with his debut novel, "Gabriel’s Story," which explores African American settlers in the American West. He followed this with historical works such as "Walk Through Darkness," set during the lead-up to the Civil War, and "Pride of Carthage," centered on Hannibal Barca’s conflict with Rome. His epic fantasy trilogy, "The Acacia Trilogy," comprising "The War With The Mein," "The Other Lands," and "The Sacred Band," earned critical acclaim and solidified his reputation in speculative fiction.

Durham’s writing spans diverse genres while maintaining a focus on richly detailed historical settings and complex character dynamics. His novel "The Risen" delves into the Spartacus slave rebellion, showcasing his ability to blend meticulous research with compelling storytelling. Additionally, he contributes to George R.R. Martin’s "Wild Cards" series, expanding his creative range through collaborative world-building. A recipient of the John W. An accomplished educator, Durham holds an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Maryland and has taught at numerous institutions, including the University of Massachusetts and Hampshire College. His forthcoming middle-grade fantasy series, beginning with "The Shadow Prince," introduces a solarpunk-inspired ancient Egypt, with the sequel, "The Longest Night in Egypt," scheduled for release in 2023.
