Derek B. Miller is an accomplished American author and international affairs specialist. He has held various positions and consulted for numerous organizations, including The Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations at Geneva, The Small Arms Survey, International Alert, the United Nations Development Programme, and The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research. His expertise in international affairs led him to found The Policy Lab and help launch New Voices, a storytelling initiative to innovate learning about war and peace.
In addition to his work in international affairs, Miller is a renowned author of six highly acclaimed novels: Norwegian by Night, The Girl in Green, American by Day, Radio Life, Quiet Time (an Audible Original), and How to Find Your Way in the Dark. His debut novel, Norwegian by Night, was featured by The Times as a book to look out for in 2013 and listed by The Economist as one of the best books in the world that same year. How to Find Your Way in the Dark was a Finalist for the National Jewish Book Award and a New York Times Best Mystery of 2021.
Miller's work has been shortlisted for numerous awards, including the CWA Gold Dagger Award (twice), the Strand Magazine Critic's Award for Best First Novel, the American Bookseller's Association's Indie Choice Award, the Barry Award for Best First Novel, and the Macavity Award for Best First Mystery. Norwegian by Night won the CWA John Creasey Dagger Award for best first crime novel, an eDunnit Award and the Goldsboro Last Laugh Award.
Miller is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College (BA), Georgetown (MA), and he earned his Ph.D., summa cum laude, in international relations from The Graduate Institute in Geneva. He has lived abroad for over twenty-five years in Israel, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Switzerland, Norway, and Spain, and is currently connected to numerous peace and security research and policy centers in North America, Europe, and Africa. He was born in Massachusetts and raised in Wellesley, coming from a family that emigrated from Eastern Europe, and is Jewish. He is married to Camila Wassink from Norway and they have two children, Clara and Julian. The family resides in Oslo, Norway, though Miller still has close ties with New England.
