Robinson was born in Bristol, UK, and attended Cotham Grammar School. After completing his education, he served in the Royal Air Force as a fighter plotter during his National Service. Robinson's experience in the Royal Air Force later provided inspiration for many of his military aviation novels. After serving in the Royal Air Force, Robinson went on to attend Downing College at Cambridge University, where he earned a History degree.
Robinson has had a diverse career, including working in advertising in both the UK and the US, as well as working as a broadcaster on radio and television. He has also written several books on some of the more sordid events in the history of Bristol, his hometown, and guides to rugby. Robinson was nominated for the Booker Prize in 1971 for his first novel, 'Goshawk Squadron.'
