Fuyumi Ono is a Japanese novelist best known for her acclaimed fantasy series "Twelve Kingdoms" ("Juuni Kokuki"), which inspired a popular anime adaptation. Her debut work, "Sleepless on Birthday Eve," marked the beginning of a prolific career spanning horror and fantasy genres. Among her notable early works is the horror novel "The Demonic Child" ("Mashou no Ko"), which she later integrated into the expansive "Twelve Kingdoms" universe.
Born in Nakatsu, Ōita, Ono graduated from Ōtani University with a degree in Buddhist Studies before joining publisher Kōdansha in 1988. Her writing often blends intricate world-building with psychological depth, particularly evident in the "Twelve Kingdoms" series, which includes short stories such as "Kasho," "Toei," and "Hisho no Tori." Married to mystery novelist Yukito Ayatsuji, Ono continues to revisit and revise her earlier works, including a girls' horror series she wrote years prior. Her contributions to Japanese literature have solidified her reputation as a master of speculative fiction.
