Gary L. Francione is a Distinguished Professor of Law and Nicholas deB. Katzenbach Scholar of Law and Philosophy at Rutgers University School of Law-Newark, renowned for his pioneering work in animal rights theory and law. As the first academic to teach animal rights in an American law school, he has authored influential works such as "Introduction to Animal Rights: Your Child or the Dog?," "Animals, Property, and the Law," and "Animals as Persons: Essays on the Abolition of Animal Exploitation." His abolitionist approach rejects all forms of animal exploitation, distinguishing his philosophy from both animal welfare frameworks and rights theories limited to cognitively advanced beings.
Francione's career spans decades of scholarship, litigation, and advocacy. After earning degrees in philosophy and law from the University of Virginia, he clerked for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor before entering academia. With his colleague Anna E. Charlton, he established the groundbreaking Rutgers Animal Rights Law Clinic, integrating practical legal training with theoretical instruction. His critiques of animal welfare laws and the legal status of animals as property have shaped contemporary debates, while his interdisciplinary courses bridge animal rights, human rights, and legal philosophy.
Beyond academia, Francione has lectured internationally and appeared on numerous media platforms to discuss his abolitionist vegan philosophy. His works, including "Rain Without Thunder: The Ideology of the Animal Rights Movement," analyze the limitations of traditional advocacy approaches. He continues to teach at Rutgers, offering courses on criminal law, jurisprudence, and the intersection of human and animal rights.
