George Kimball

George Kimball was a distinguished sports journalist and author best known for his extensive coverage of boxing. His acclaimed book, "Four Kings: Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran and the Last Great Era of Boxing," became a bestseller in both the United Kingdom and the United States, cementing his reputation as a leading voice in boxing literature. He also authored "American at Large," a collection of his columns from "The Irish Times", and co-wrote "Chairman of the Boards" with Eamonn Coghlan.

During his career, Kimball spent 25 years as a sports columnist for the "Boston Herald" and a decade as sports editor of "The Boston Phoenix". He was the recipient of the Nat Fleischer Award for Excellence in Boxing Journalism and covered nearly every major boxing event, including the entire reign of Marvelous Marvin Hagler. His writing extended beyond boxing, earning accolades for his coverage of golf, baseball, and the Olympics. Known for his sharp insights and engaging prose, Kimball also co-edited notable anthologies such as "The Fighter Still Remains" and "At the Fights: American Writers on Boxing."

Kimball continued to contribute to sports journalism through his weekly column, "America at Large," for "The Irish Times", and as a featured columnist for ESPN.com and "Boxing Digest". A longtime resident of New York City, he passed away in 2011, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most respected figures in sports writing.
