George R. Stewart

George Rippey Stewart was an American novelist, toponymist, and professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley. He gained widespread recognition for his post-apocalyptic science fiction novel "Earth Abides" (1949), which won the inaugural International Fantasy Award in 1951. The novel's influence extended beyond literature, inspiring Stephen King's "The Stand" and a radio adaptation on "Escape". Stewart also authored "Storm" (1941), a pioneering work that personified a Pacific storm named Maria, directly influencing the National Weather Service's storm-naming conventions and inspiring the song "They Call the Wind Maria" in the musical "Paint Your Wagon".

Stewart's writing often explored environmental catastrophes and historical events, as seen in works like "Ordeal by Hunger" (1936), which chronicled the Donner Party tragedy, and "Fire" (1948), another disaster narrative. His academic contributions were equally significant, particularly in the study of toponymy. His seminal work, "Names on the Land: A Historical Account of Place-Naming in the United States" (1945), remains a foundational text, supplemented by later volumes such as "A Concise Dictionary of American Place-Names" (1970) and "Names on the Globe" (1975). A founding member of the American Name Society, Stewart also applied his expertise as a witness in legal cases involving family names. His scholarly pursuits extended to poetic meter, with early works on ballad structure remaining influential in literary studies.
