After studying English and theatre in college, Basnight moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. However, he soon found that the actor's struggle was a difficult one, and he turned to local radio as a way to make a living. For almost three decades, Basnight worked in New York City as a broadcast news writer, editor, producer, and reporter. Throughout this time, he continued to write fiction, honing his craft and developing his unique voice.
When Basnight was laid off as a radio reporter during the height of the financial crisis in 2008, he saw it as an opportunity to pursue a second (or third) life.
