Gregory Maguire

Gregory Maguire is a distinguished American novelist, well-known for his fantasy and children's novels. He has made a significant impact in the literary world with his unique storytelling, often reimagining classic children's tales from a fresh perspective. One of his most famous works is the Wicked Years series, which offers a new take on L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, focusing on the early life of the wicked witch Elphaba.

Maguire was born in Albany, New York, and went on to receive his Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Tufts University. He also holds a B.A. from the State University of New York at Albany. His academic background and passion for literature are evident in his intricate and thought-provoking novels. In addition to his writing, Maguire has been an influential figure in the world of children's literature as a professor and co-director at the Simmons College Center for the Study of Children's Literature from 1979 to 1985.

In 1987, Maguire co-founded Children's Literature New England, a non-profit educational charity, where he still serves as co-director. His commitment to the organization and the literary community has been unwavering, even as the organization has announced its intention to close after its 2006 institute. Maguire's dedication to promoting literacy and fostering a love for reading in both children and adults is a testament to his belief in the power of storytelling.

Throughout his career, Maguire has been honored with numerous accolades, including a Locus Award nomination. Some of his most popular works include Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, Mirror Mirror, and the Wicked Years series, which includes Wicked, Son of a Witch, and A Lion Among Men. The groundbreaking novel Wicked served as the inspiration for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name. Maguire is also a dedicated family man, married to painter Andy Newman and the proud father of three adopted children. He currently resides with his family near Boston, Massachusetts.
