Guy N. Smith

Guy N. Smith (1939–2020) was a British author best known for his prolific contributions to horror fiction. Born in Hopwas, Staffordshire, he began writing at an early age, publishing his first stories in "The Tettenhall Observer" at just 12 years old. His breakthrough came in 1976 with the bestselling novel "Night of the Crabs," which spawned five sequels and established him as a leading figure in pulp horror. Over his career, Smith wrote more than 100 books, including cult classics like "Werewolf by Moonlight," "The Slime Beast," and "The Sucking Pit," earning a dedicated fanbase and international recognition, particularly in Poland where his works sold in massive quantities.

Though primarily associated with horror, Smith demonstrated remarkable versatility, writing crime novels under the pseudonym Gavin Newman and children's animal stories as Jonathan Guy. He also authored numerous nonfiction works, including shooting manuals and "Writing Horror Fiction," a guide for aspiring authors. His passion for firearms and the outdoors frequently influenced his writing, reflecting his lifelong enthusiasm for hunting and countryside pursuits. After leaving banking in the 1970s, he embraced writing full-time, later founding his own publishing company to release his works independently.

Smith resided in Shropshire with his wife, Jean, where he balanced writing with his role as Gun Editor for "The Countryman's Weekly". Despite his success in horror, he remained deeply connected to his rural roots, contributing thousands of articles on firearms and field sports. His legacy endures through his vast bibliography and the enduring popularity of his most iconic creations, particularly the "Crabs" series. Smith continued writing until his death in 2020, leaving behind a body of work that cemented his status as a cult icon in genre fiction.
