H.G. Wells

Herbert George Wells, known as H.G. Wells, was an English author born on September 21, 1866, in Bromley, Kent, England. He was born into a working-class family, with his father being a professional cricket player and his mother a lady's maid. Due to family financial difficulties, Wells had a spotty education, which included apprenticeships as a draper and a chemist's assistant. However, he received a government scholarship in 1884 to study biology under Thomas Henry Huxley at the Normal School of Science. Wells earned his bachelor of science and doctor of science degrees at the University of London.

H.G. Wells is considered one of the fathers of science fiction, alongside Hugo Gernsback and Jules Verne. His science fiction novels, such as "The Time Machine," "The War of the Worlds," "The Invisible Man," and "The Island of Doctor Moreau," are groundbreaking works that continue to captivate readers. However, his literary contributions extend far beyond science fiction. He was a prolific author who wrote in various genres, including politics, history, social realism, and non-fiction.

Wells was a socialist and used his writings to advocate for his political beliefs and causes, such as the prevention of war. His non-fiction works, including "A Modern Utopia," "The Outline of History," "A Short History of the World," and "The Shape of Things to Come," reflect his wide-ranging interests and intellectual pursuits. In addition to his contributions to literature, Wells co-founded The Diabetic Association, now known as Diabetes UK, as he was a diabetic himself.

Throughout his life, H.G. Wells was recognized for his literary achievements. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. Despite his conventional start in life, Wells' intellectual curiosity, creativity, and advocacy for social change solidified his place as one of the most influential writers of his time.
