H. Rider Haggard

H. Rider Haggard was a prominent English writer who was born on June 22, 1856. He is best known by his pen name, Sir Henry Rider Haggard, and is celebrated for his adventure fiction novels that were set in exotic locations around the world, particularly in Africa. Haggard is recognized as the founder of the "lost world" literary genre, which continues to be popular and influential today.

Haggard's breakout novel was "King Solomon's Mines," which was published in 1885 and marked the beginning of a series of stories centered around the adventures of its main character, Allan Quatermain. The book was an instant success and remains Haggard's most well-known work. The author's other popular novels include "She" and "Ayesha," both of which were adapted into successful films.

In addition to his literary achievements, Haggard was also involved in agricultural reform and improvement in the British Empire. He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919 in recognition of his contributions. Haggard's passion for politics led him to stand unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Conservative candidate for the Eastern division of Norfolk in 1895.

Haggard's writing is characterized by its adventurous spirit and exotic settings. His stories, while situated at the lighter end of the scale of Victorian literature, continue to captivate readers with their thrilling plots and engaging characters. The author's legacy is commemorated in the locality of Rider, British Columbia, which was named in his memory.
