Hank Early

Hank Early is a pseudonym for the American author and teacher, John Mantooth. Early is well-known for his Southern Gothic fiction, a genre that combines elements of crime and horror, often set in the American South. Early's works are characterized by their vivid descriptions, complex characters, and intricate plotlines, which keep readers engaged and guessing until the very end.

Early grew up in the mountains of North Georgia, where he developed a deep appreciation for the region's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Although he never held a snake or was struck by lightning, as some might expect from a Southern Gothic writer, he did spend much of his youth exploring the woods and learning about the area's history. Today, Early resides in central Alabama with his wife and two children, where he continues to draw inspiration from his surroundings.

In addition to writing under the name Hank Early, John Mantooth has also published several works under his given name. These earlier works, while not strictly Southern Gothic, showcase Mantooth's versatility and talent as a writer. With a background in teaching, Early has a unique perspective on the power of storytelling and its ability to engage and inspire readers of all ages. His debut novel, "Heaven's Crooked Finger," was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, and he is represented by Alec Shane of Writers House. Despite his success, Early remains humble and dedicated to his craft, continuing to write crime fiction and watch too much basketball in his free time.
