Harry Mathews

Harry Mathews was an American author renowned for his innovative contributions to literature across novels, poetry, short fiction, and essays. Among his notable works are "The Conversions," "Tlooth," and "Cigarettes," which exemplify his experimental narrative techniques and linguistic playfulness. He co-founded the influential literary journal "Locus Solus" with John Ashbery, James Schuyler, and Kenneth Koch, drawing inspiration from Raymond Roussel, a key influence on his early career. Mathews was also the first American admitted to the Oulipo, a French literary group dedicated to exploring creative constraints in writing.

Mathews' writing often reflected Oulipian principles, employing structured patterns and algorithmic methods to craft his narratives. His friendship with Georges Perec, another Oulipo member, led to mutual translations of their works, further enriching his literary output. Before joining Oulipo, Mathews had already been experimenting with constrained writing techniques, demonstrating a lifelong fascination with formal innovation. He divided his time between Paris, Key West, and New York, maintaining a transatlantic literary presence alongside his wife, the writer Marie Chaix.
