Helen Carey is a well-known author, best recognized for her bestselling Lavender Road series. The series, set in London during the Second World War, includes Lavender Road, Some Sunny Day, On a Wing and a Prayer, London Calling, and The Other Side of the Street. Carey's interest in the Second World War was sparked by a chance encounter with a neighbor in London, who pointed out where the air-raid shelters once stood on Clapham Common. This interaction piqued her curiosity, and she began researching and writing about lesser-known aspects of the war.
Carey has lived an adventurous life, having worked many different jobs and lived in various parts of the world. Her past employment includes working as a travel agent, in the British Army, as a chalet girl, an oil trader, a waitress, and a management consultant. These diverse experiences have undoubtedly contributed to the rich and nuanced characters and settings found in her books.
Currently, Carey resides in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, where she and her husband run a small coastal farm as a conservation project. In addition to writing and farming, Carey is also a fellow of the Royal Literary Fund and a member of the Society of Authors. She has a Royal Literary Fund fellowship at Aberystwyth University and teaches Creative Writing at various universities, specializing in story structure. Carey's writing has been well-received, with Victory Girls, the final book in the Lavender Road series, already appearing on the Amazon US bestseller charts.
