Helen Nielsen was an American author best known for her mystery novels and television scripts, including contributions to popular series such as "Perry Mason" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." Her works, such as "Detour" and "Sing Me a Murder," were celebrated for their gripping narratives and were later reprinted by Black Lizard, cementing her reputation in the genre. Many of her stories drew inspiration from her long-time residences in Laguna Beach and Oceanside, California, where she lived for six decades.
Before becoming a writer, Nielsen studied journalism, art, and aeronautical drafting at institutions like the Chicago Art Institute. During World War II, she worked as a draftsman, contributing to the designs of aircraft such as the B-36 and P-80. This technical background informed her precise and detail-oriented writing style, which thrived in both mystery fiction and television drama. Her ability to craft suspenseful plots and vivid settings made her a standout figure in mid-20th-century crime fiction.
