Chang's writing is informed by his lifelong experiences in the Chinese community, and his "Chinatown Trilogy" is a hard-boiled reflection of those experiences. The books, which include Chinatown Beat, Year of the Dog, and Red Jade, have received critical acclaim from various publications. Chang's writing aims to interpret the mystery of why and how things occur in Chinatowns across America and show how crime impacts the survivors and the families involved. He incorporates tidbits of Chinatown history and sociology into his storylines, giving voice to the voiceless and shedding light on issues such as exploitation, discrimination, violence, and racism in America.
