Nancy Jean Buckingham Sawyer was a prolific British author best known for her gothic novels and romantic fiction, often co-written with her husband, John Sawyer. Under her maiden name, Nancy Buckingham, she published classical gothic novels beginning in 1967. In the 1970s, the couple adopted pseudonyms such as Christina Abbey and Erica Quest, later blending their names to create the joint penname Nancy John. Their collaboration also included a novel published as Hilary London. Among their notable works is a popular police procedural series featuring Detective Chief Inspector Kate Maddox, released under the Erica Quest pseudonym.
Throughout her career, Sawyer demonstrated versatility across genres, transitioning from gothic romance to contemporary romantic suspense and police procedurals. Her leadership in the literary community was evident through her role as Chairman of the Romantic Novelists' Association from 1973 to 1975, later serving as a vice-president. The couple's partnership lasted until John Sawyer's passing in 1994, marking the end of a dynamic writing team whose final novel was published in 1992.
