His passion for history was nurtured during his childhood in Georgetown, Ontario, where he frequented the local library, devouring historical fiction by authors like Geoffrey Trease and Rosemary Sutcliffe. Brewster's career began in publishing, first with Scholastic Inc., where he played a key role in developing their Canadian children's program and discovered young talent like Gordon Korman. Later, as Editorial Director and Publisher of Madison Press Books, he edited acclaimed titles such as Robert Ballard's "The Discovery of the Titanic" and "TITANIC: An Illustrated History," which inspired James Cameron's film.

Brewster transitioned to writing with notable success, beginning with "Anastasia’s Album: The Last Tsar’s Youngest Daughter Tells Her Own Story," which won multiple awards.
