Hugh Brewster

Hugh Brewster is a Canadian author and editor renowned for his meticulously researched historical works, particularly those exploring pivotal moments in history. His passion for history was nurtured during his childhood in Georgetown, Ontario, where he frequented the local library, devouring historical fiction by authors like Geoffrey Trease and Rosemary Sutcliffe. Brewster's career began in publishing, first with Scholastic Inc., where he played a key role in developing their Canadian children's program and discovered young talent like Gordon Korman. Later, as Editorial Director and Publisher of Madison Press Books, he edited acclaimed titles such as Robert Ballard's "The Discovery of the Titanic" and "TITANIC: An Illustrated History," which inspired James Cameron's film.

Brewster transitioned to writing with notable success, beginning with "Anastasia’s Album: The Last Tsar’s Youngest Daughter Tells Her Own Story," which won multiple awards. He gained further recognition for his Titanic-related works, including "Inside the Titanic" and "882 1/2 Amazing Answers to Your Questions About the Titanic," co-authored with Laurie Coulter. His focus on World War II produced award-winning titles like "On Juno Beach" and "At Vimy Ridge," the latter earning the Norma Fleck Award. Brewster also expanded into historical fiction with Scholastic's "I Am Canada" series, contributing "Prisoner of Dieppe" and "Deadly Voyage." His 2012 book, "Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage," marked the Titanic's centennial with a detailed adult-oriented account. Brewster's works are celebrated for their engaging narrative style and dedication to historical accuracy.
