Caldwell graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County, Virginia, where he met his future collaborator and childhood friend, Dustin Thomason. He then went on to attend Princeton University, graduating in 1998 as a Phi Beta Kappa in history. Caldwell's personal life has also been a source of inspiration for his work, with his wife, Meredith, and their first child, Ethan Sawyer Caldwell, providing the motivation for his writing. The family resides in Vienna, Virginia.
In 2004, Caldwell co-wrote his first novel, The Rule of Four, with Thomason. This semi-autobiographical work was a success, and Caldwell followed it up with his second solo novel, The Fifth Gospel, in 2015.
