Isaac Bashevis Singer was a prominent Polish American author, renowned for his works in the realms of science fiction, fantasy, and literature & fiction. He was born as Icek Hersz Zynger in Leocin village, near Warsaw, Poland, on November 21, 1902. Singer spent his formative years in Krochmalna, a street located near Warsaw's Jewish quarter, where he learned Yiddish and was immersed in the culture of the Jewish people. His father served as a rabbi, carrying out various religious and community functions, and his older siblings, Israel Joshua Singer and Esther Kreitman, were also authors.
Singer played a significant role in the Yiddish literary movement by choosing to write and publish solely in Yiddish. His family experienced significant hardships during the First World War, which led to their separation for safety reasons. Despite these challenges, Singer's writing career flourished, and he gained recognition for his work. In 1978, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contributions to the field. Singer's memoir, "A Day Of Pleasure: Stories of a Boy Growing Up in Warsaw," won the U.S. National Book Award in Children's Literature in 1970, and his collection "A Crown of Feathers and Other Stories" won the U.S. National Book Award in Fiction in 1974.
