J.A. Pitts was introduced to the world of science fiction by his grandmother, who would read authors like Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard to him during his childhood in rural Kentucky. Pitts' life has been significantly influenced by strong women, with his mother being the most prominent example. After his father's death, she raised three boys with grace and wit. Pitts' home was always filled with women, be they family, friends, or those in need of assistance, and he has carried this influence with him throughout his life. The women in his life have inspired him to create strong female characters, such as Sarah in his new novel.
Pitts has always been passionate about storytelling. He learned to read early and became a regular at his local library, even considering becoming a librarian at one point. However, he ended up working in high tech after discovering that librarians were not well-paid. Despite this, he has always been surrounded by books and stories, and the opportunity to sell his own tales still comes as a surprise to him. Pitts has been fortunate to work with excellent editors who have helped him bring his characters and worlds to life. His short fiction has been published in various magazines and anthologies, including DAW's Swordplay, Fortean Bureau, and Talebones magazine.
