J.M. Lee

J. M. (Joseph) Lee is a author who spent his formative years searching for talking animals and believing he had the ability to control the weather. His interests in comparative film studies, screenwriting, and Shakespeare led him to graduate with a degree in linguistics, further solidifying his love for storytelling. In addition to his work as an author, Lee enjoys teaching his dog new vocabulary words and updating his coffee blog.

In 2013, the Jim Henson Company and Grosset & Dunlap launched the Dark Crystal Author Quest, a contest to find a writer who could create the first official prequel novel to Jim Henson’s beloved fantasy classic The Dark Crystal (1982). Lee was the winner of this contest and went on to complete the first novel, Shadows of the Dark Crystal. He has since signed on for three more novels in the series, with the third installment, Tides of the Dark Crystal, already out. The finale of the series, Flames of the Dark Crystal, is scheduled for release in summer 2019.

Lee's work on the Dark Crystal series has also led him to become a staff writer and creative consultant on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a 10-episode Netflix prequel series released in August of 2019. His background in linguistics, film studies, and storytelling have all come together to make him an integral part of the Dark Crystal franchise and a respected voice in the fantasy genre.
