Jack Campbell is a well-known American author who writes primarily in the military science fiction genre. Campbell is actually a pen name for John G. Hemry, who is also a successful author in his own right. Hemry is a retired Naval officer and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He has used his extensive experience in the Navy to inform his writing, creating realistic and engaging military fiction. Campbell currently resides in Maryland with his wife and children.
John G. Hemry, who writes as Jack Campbell, was born in April 1956. He began his naval service aboard a US warship and later retired to become a full-time writer. Hemry's first published novel was released in 2000, and he went on to write the Lost Fleet series and its spin-off series, The Lost Stars, under the pseudonym Jack Campbell. These series have become some of his most popular work, and have helped to establish him as a major voice in military science fiction.
In addition to his work as Jack Campbell, Hemry has also written a number of successful series under his own name. These include the Stark's War series and the Paul Sinclair series, as well as many shorter stories featuring space opera, fantasy, time travel, and alternate history. Many of these stories can be found in the three Jack Campbell ebook anthologies. Hemry is also a member of the SFWA Musketeers, a group of writers who share a commitment to the power of the written word.
Hemry is a retired United States Navy officer and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He grew up living in several places, including Pensacola, San Diego, and Midway Island. Hemry graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons in 1974 and then attended the US Naval Academy (Class of '78), where he was known as 'the un-midshipman' by his roommates. He lives in Maryland with his wife and three children, two of whom are autistic and suffer from Neuro immune dysfunction syndrome (NIDS), an auto-immune ailment which causes their illness. Despite these challenges, Hemry's children are progressing under treatment.
