James Malcolm Rymer

James Malcolm Rymer was a prolific British writer of the nineteenth century, best known for his contributions to penny dreadful literature. He is the probable author of the seminal vampire tale "Varney the Vampire," often misattributed to Thomas Peckett Prest, and co-authored "The String of Pearls," which introduced the infamous character Sweeney Todd. Between 1842 and 1867, Rymer produced approximately 115 popular novels for publisher Edward Lloyd, including notable works such as "Ada the Betrayed."

Rymer's career spanned multiple genres, with a focus on sensational and gothic fiction that captivated Victorian audiences. Initially listed as a civil engineer in the 1841 London Directory, he transitioned to writing and editing, later serving as the editor of the "Queen's Magazine." His works often appeared under his own name as well as pseudonyms like Malcolm J. Errym and Malcolm J. Merry. Rymer passed away on 11 August 1884 and is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery in London.
