James P. Blaylock is an American fantasy author, best known for his Narbondo series and the Balumnia trilogy. He has made a significant contribution to the science-fiction and horror genres, establishing himself as a strong voice in the industry. Blaylock's writing is characterized by his ability to take the reader on a journey, allowing his characters to come alive off the page and leave a lasting impact. His work is clear, confident, and demonstrates a deep understanding of his audience.
Blaylock was born in Long Beach, California, and studied English at California State University, Fullerton, where he received his M.A. in 1974. He currently resides in Orange, California, where he teaches creative writing at Chapman University. Many of his books are set in Orange County, and his works often fall into the category of "fabulism," where fantastic things happen in our present-day world, rather than in traditional fantasy settings. In addition to his solo work, Blaylock has also collaborated with his friend and fellow author, Tim Powers, on several projects, including the creation of the poet William Ashbless.
Blaylock, along with Powers, was mentored by the acclaimed science-fiction author Philip K. Dick. In addition to their collaborative writing projects, Blaylock and Powers have also worked together in their professional lives, with Blaylock serving as the Director of the Creative Writing Conservatory at the Orange County High School of the Arts, where Powers is Writer in Residence. This collaboration is a testament to the enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two authors, who continue to inspire and influence each other in their respective writing careers.
