Jan de Hartog

Jan de Hartog (1914–2002) was a Dutch novelist, playwright, and social critic best known for his maritime-themed works. After relocating to the United States in the 1960s, he became a Quaker and transitioned to writing primarily in English. His early career included five detective novels published under the pseudonym F.R. Eckmar, featuring the adventures of Commissioner Wiebe Poesiat and Inspector Gregor Boyarski of the metropolitan harbor police.

De Hartog gained broader recognition for his novels centered on seafaring life, reflecting his deep connection to maritime culture. His works often explored themes of human resilience, morality, and social justice, influenced by his Quaker beliefs. Though he began with detective fiction, his later output encompassed a diverse range of genres, including historical fiction and drama, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and thoughtful storyteller.
