After relocating to the United States in the 1960s, he became a Quaker and transitioned to writing primarily in English. His early career included five detective novels published under the pseudonym F.R. Eckmar, featuring the adventures of Commissioner Wiebe Poesiat and Inspector Gregor Boyarski of the metropolitan harbor police.
