Jane K. Cleland is a successful American author, known for her cozy mystery novels and non-fiction books. She is best known for her Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries series, which has garnered her multiple awards and widespread recognition. In addition to her work as an author, Cleland is also a playwright, crafting noir and comedic plays that explore the complexities of women's relationships with men.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Newton, Cleland attended the University of Denver, where she earned her B.A. in English and Theatre. She went on to Babson College, obtaining her MBA in Marketing and Management. Her love for writing led her to Western Connecticut State University, where she received her M.F.A in Playwriting and Speechwriting. This diverse educational background is evident in her writing, which is characterized by its strong plotting, engaging characters, and sharp attention to detail.
In addition to her work as an author and playwright, Cleland is also an experienced educator. She currently serves on the faculty of Lehman College, which is part of the City University of New York, where she mentors MFA students in the Creative & Professional Writing program. She is also a frequent workshop facilitator and guest author at writing conferences and university programs. Cleland is passionate about sharing her knowledge and expertise with others, and is known for her engaging and informative presentations on the craft of writing.
Cleland is also the chair of the Black Orchid Novella Award, and a Contributing Editor for Writer’s Digest Magazine. She has written several bestselling and award-winning how-to books, including Mastering Plot Twists and Mastering Suspense, Structure & Plot, both from Writer’s Digest Books. Cleland also presents a free monthly webinar series on the craft of writing, as well as the Mystery Mastermind series, her small-group virtual writing workshops.
Prior to her career as a writer and educator, Cleland owned a New Hampshire-based antiques and rare books business. This experience has informed her writing, providing her with a deep understanding of the world of antiques and collectibles that is evident in her Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries series. She has been a finalist for the Macavity, Anthony, and Agatha awards, and has twice won the David Award for Best Novel. Cleland currently lives in New York City, where she continues to write, teach, and inspire other writers to pursue their craft.
