Jeannette Grunhaus De Gelman

Jeannette Grunhaus de Gelman is a Venezuelan writer, professor, and researcher whose work focuses on Holocaust studies and the experiences of Second-Generation survivors. Born in Szczecin, Poland, in 1946 to Polish Holocaust survivors from Włodawa, she emigrated with her family to Venezuela, where they settled in Maracaibo. Her debut work, "On Sunny Days We Sang" ("En los días claros cantábamos"), published in 2018, chronicles her parents' survival during Nazi-occupied Poland. The book, her first full-length publication, emerged from her research at Florida Atlantic University, where she was a Research Scholar from 2013 to 2018.

Gelman's academic background includes an undergraduate degree in French from Wellesley College, an MA in Spanish Literature from New York University, and an MA in French teaching from the Université de Paris III. She taught French Language and Literature at the Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo for over two decades, from 1971 to 1996. Her writing is deeply influenced by her family's history, reflecting her commitment to preserving Holocaust narratives. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, she lectured to high school and college students about the destruction of Polish Jewish life, an endeavor she plans to continue. Now residing in Miami, Florida, Gelman remains dedicated to exploring themes of trauma, memory, and resilience.
