Jennifer Oko is an accomplished writer, journalist, and filmmaker known for her sharp wit and satirical storytelling. She is the author of four books, including the memoir "Lying Together: My Russian Affair," which was twice named an Editor’s Choice by "The New York Times Book Review" and praised by "Publisher’s Weekly" as "sharp, fast-paced." Her novel "Gloss," a satire of morning television, drew comparisons to Carl Hiaasen’s work and was optioned for television development. Oko’s other works include the comic mystery "Head Case," centered on psycho-pharmaceutical trafficking, and her latest novel, "Just Emilia," a darkly humorous exploration of identity and trauma through the lens of time travel.
With a background spanning over two decades in television news and documentary production, Oko co-founded Because.Media, a boutique production company creating content for prominent outlets such as PBS, HBO, and "The New York Times". Her journalistic expertise informs her fiction, blending incisive social commentary with engaging narratives. She holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and undergraduate degrees in Studio Arts and Russian Language and Literature.
Oko’s work often delves into themes of identity, media culture, and personal reckoning, marked by her distinctive comedic voice.
