Jim Fergus is an American author known for his historical fiction and nonfiction works. Born in Chicago in 1950, he gained widespread acclaim with his debut novel, "One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd," which won the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Association Fiction of the Year Award in 1999. The novel became an international bestseller, selling over a million copies in the U.S. and spending 57 weeks on the French bestseller list. Fergus expanded the story into a trilogy, with subsequent installments including "The Vengeance of Mothers" and "Strongheart." His other notable novels include "The Wild Girl: The Notebooks of Ned Giles" and "The Memory of Love," the latter inspired by the life of painter Chrysis Jungbluth.
Fergus began his career as a freelance writer after working as a tennis instructor, contributing to publications such as "Newsweek", "Esquire", and "Outside" magazine. His nonfiction works, including "A Hunter's Road" and "The Sporting Road," reflect his passion for outdoor life and adventure. His writing often explores themes of cultural conflict, resilience, and historical reimagination, blending meticulous research with vivid storytelling. Fergus divides his time between the American Southwest, Colorado, and France, where several of his novels were first published.
