Joann Sfar

Joann Sfar is a French comics artist, comic book creator, and film director renowned for his contributions to the Franco-Belgian comics movement. Born on August 28, 1971, in Nice, he emerged as a pivotal figure in the new wave of graphic storytelling, collaborating with notable artists such as David B. and Lewis Trondheim. Among his acclaimed works is "The Donjon" series, co-created with Trondheim, which has garnered a cult following internationally. Sfar's diverse portfolio also includes "Le chat du rabbin," a celebrated series inspired by his Sephardic Jewish heritage, and "Les olives noires," which explores historical and theological themes set in ancient Israel.

Sfar's work is deeply influenced by his Jewish background, blending Ashkenazi humor, as seen in "Professeur Bell," with the rich cultural traditions of his Sephardic roots. His artistic style reflects inspirations from a wide range of creators, including Fred, André Franquin, Marc Chagall, and Will Eisner. Beyond comics, Sfar ventured into filmmaking with "Serge Gainsbourg: Une Vie Héroïque," a 2010 biopic that showcased his talents as both a writer and director.
