John Dunning is an accomplished American author, known for his work in detective fiction and non-fiction. He has written reference books about old-time radio and is celebrated for his series of mysteries featuring Denver bookseller and ex-policeman Cliff Janeway. Dunning's writing career has been marked by a variety of interests and a versatile voice, leading him to become a highly respected figure in the industry.
Before turning to fiction, Dunning worked in a number of different fields, including as a stablehand at a horseracing track and as a worker at The Denver Post. He began writing fiction in 1970, but faced difficulties with his publishers and took a break from writing to open up a used book store. At the urging of fellow authors, he returned to writing fiction and started his Cliff Janeway series.
In addition to his work as a fiction author, Dunning has also written reference books about old-time radio. He has gained a great deal of acclaim for his work, both critically and commercially, and has built a reputation for his unique voice and wide-ranging interests. In an interview, Dunning stated that his novel "Booked to Die" gave him the freedom to write full-time, and that his work is often drawn from his own life experiences.
