John Fox Jr. was an American journalist and novelist best known for his works set in the Appalachian region, including "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come" and "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine." His writing often explored themes of mountain life, family feuds, and cultural clashes, earning him widespread recognition during his lifetime. Fox's career began in journalism, working for the New York Sun and the New York Times before transitioning to fiction. His first published story, "A Mountain Europa," appeared serially in Century magazine in 1892, followed by "A Cumberland Vendetta" a year later, establishing his signature focus on Appalachian narratives.

Fox's literary career spanned multiple genres, including short stories, novels, and war correspondence. Early collections such as "A Cumberland Vendetta and Other Stories" and "Hell-Fer-Sartain and Other Stories" showcased his talent for regional storytelling. As a journalist, he covered the Spanish-American War in Cuba and the Russo-Japanese War in Manchuria, resulting in works like "Following the Sun Flag: A Vain Pursuit Through Manchuria." His novels, particularly "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine," achieved both critical and commercial success, with multiple film adaptations produced between 1912 and 1936.

A respected figure in literary circles, Fox maintained friendships with prominent writers such as Richard Harding Davis and Jack London. His contributions to literature were recognized with numerous honors, including membership in the National Institute of Arts and Letters and a medal from the Emperor of Japan. Fox also played a pivotal role in advocating for the Federal Copyright Act. He spent his later years at his family home in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, now a historic museum dedicated to his legacy.
