John Kessel

John Kessel is an acclaimed science fiction writer and educator known for his erudite, satirical, and psychologically nuanced works. A recipient of the Nebula, Locus, Theodore Sturgeon, and Tiptree Awards, he has published five novels, including "Good News from Outer Space," "Corrupting Dr. Nice," and "Pride and Prometheus," as well as three short story collections: "Meeting in Infinity," "The Pure Product," and "The Baum Plan for Financial Independence and Other Stories." His novella "Another Orphan" and short story "Pride and Prometheus" both won Nebula Awards, with the latter blending Jane Austen’s "Pride and Prejudice" with Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein." His work has been recognized as a New York Times Notable Book, and his story "A Clean Escape" was adapted for the ABC series "Masters of Science Fiction."

Kessel’s writing is celebrated for its literary craftsmanship, wit, and speculative depth. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction describes him as "one of the writers capable of bending the tools of science fiction upon the human psyche," while Publisher’s Weekly praised "The Pure Product" for its subtlety, humor, and remarkable sense of comedy. His collaborations include the novel "Freedom Beach" with James Patrick Kelly and co-editing anthologies such as "Feeling Very Strange" and "The Secret History of Science Fiction." Beyond fiction, Kessel has written plays and appeared in the independent film "The Delicate Art of the Rifle."

A professor of literature and creative writing at North Carolina State University, Kessel co-directs its creative writing program and has been a longtime organizer of the Sycamore Hill Writers’ Workshop. Born in Buffalo, New York, he holds a PhD in American Literature and has been an NEA Fellow. He is married to novelist Therese Anne Fowler, author of the bestselling "Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald." Kessel continues to write and teach, maintaining a significant influence in both literary and genre circles.
