John Lewis

John Robert Lewis was a prominent figure in American politics and civil rights activism. He served as the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020, making him the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. Born and raised in Alabama, Lewis was exposed to the harsh realities of racial segregation at a young age, which sparked his passion for activism.

Lewis was a leader in the American Civil Rights Movement and played a crucial role in the struggle to end segregation. He served as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), where he organized sit-ins and protests to challenge discriminatory practices. Despite facing more than 40 arrests, physical attacks, and serious injuries, Lewis remained committed to the philosophy of nonviolence. His dedication and leadership earned him numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Lincoln Medal, and the NAACP Spingarn Medal.

In addition to his political career, Lewis was also a prolific writer. He co-authored the first comics work ever to win the National Book Award, the #1 New York Times bestselling graphic novel memoir trilogy MARCH, written with Andrew Aydin and illustrated by Nate Powell. The trilogy chronicles Lewis's experiences in the Civil Rights Movement and has been praised for its powerful storytelling and impactful message. Lewis lived in Atlanta, Georgia, where he continued to be an advocate for civil rights and social justice until his passing.
