John Rhode

Cecil John Charles Street, known professionally as John Street and Miles Burton, was a British military officer turned prolific detective novelist. Under the pen name John Rhode, he created the forensic scientist Dr. Priestley, whose cases pioneered scientific crime detection methods, such as analyzing mud samples from suspects' shoes. Writing as Miles Burton, Street introduced amateur sleuth Desmond Merrion, who collaborated with Scotland Yard's Inspector Arnold. Additionally, he published four novels under the pseudonym Cecil Waye, including "The Figure of Eight" and "Murder at Monk's Barn." His works became foundational in the "Humdrum" school of detective fiction, known for intricate puzzles over literary flair.

Street's military background significantly influenced his writing career. After serving as an artillery officer in World War I, he transitioned to propaganda work for MI7, eventually rising to the rank of Major. His later role as an Information Officer during the Irish War of Independence provided further exposure to investigative processes, which informed his meticulous plotting. Critic Julian Symons highlighted Street's prominence among British "Humdrum" writers, who prioritized logical puzzle construction over stylistic flourish. Despite this label, Street's Dr. Priestley series stood out for its early emphasis on forensic science, predating many modern crime-solving techniques.

By the time of his death in 1965, Street had authored numerous novels across his pseudonyms, leaving a lasting legacy in Golden Age detective fiction. His dual series - featuring Dr. Priestley and Desmond Merrion - remained influential for their methodical approach to crime-solving, bridging military precision with fictional intrigue.
